The Book of Haggai is a short but powerful Old Testament book that focuses on obedience, spiritual priorities, restoration, and God’s presence. Haggai was a prophet who spoke to the people of Judah after they returned from Babylonian exile.  After returning to Jerusalem, the people began rebuilding the temple, but they stopped. They became more focused on their own homes and personal lives while the house of God remained unfinished.

Through Haggai, God called his people to examine their priorities, return to the work, and put him first. Although Haggai contains only two chapters, its message remains relevant for Christians today.

Background of Haggai: A Call to Put God First

After the people of Judah returned from exile, they started rebuilding the temple in Jerusalem. But because of opposition, discouragement, and their own problems, they stopped the work. Instead, they focused on building and improving their own homes while God’s temple was still in ruins. Through the prophet Haggai, God reminded them to think about their priorities and put him first.

Moreover, Haggai’s message was not only about rebuilding the temple. But it was also a call to bring God back to the centre of their lives and restore their relationship with him.

Chapter 1: A Call to Rebuild God’s Temple

Haggai Chapter 1 begins with God speaking to Zerubbabel, the governor of Judah, and Joshua, the high priest. The people had stopped rebuilding the temple and believed that the right time had not yet come.

God asked them to think carefully about their lives: “Consider your ways!” — Haggai 1:5

The people were working hard, but they were not satisfied. They had food but were still hungry, earned money but could not save it, and worked hard without seeing good results. God showed them that their priorities were wrong. They were busy building and improving their own homes while his temple was still lying in ruins. Through Haggai, God told them to go to the mountains, bring wood, and start rebuilding the temple. The people listened to God’s message. Zerubbabel, Joshua, and the people obeyed and began the work.

This teaches us that hearing God’s word should lead us to take action.

Chapter 2: Be Strong and Keep Going

In Haggai Chapter 2, God encouraged the people to stay strong and continue rebuilding the temple. Some people felt discouraged because the new temple did not look as beautiful as the old one.

God told Zerubbabel, Joshua, and the people: “Be strong … and work, for I am with you.” — Haggai 2:4

God reminded them that they should not focus only on what they could see. His presence was more important than the size or appearance of their work. This chapter reminds us that God cares not only about what we build outwardly but also about our hearts and our relationship with him.

Key Lessons From Haggai

The Book of Haggai teaches us several simple but important lessons for our lives today, such as:

  • Put God First: We should not become so busy with our own lives that we forget God. He should have an important place in our daily lives.
  • Think About Your Life: God asked the people to “consider their ways.” We should also take time to look at our choices and make sure that our lives are following God’s will.
  • Do Not Delay Obedience: The people kept delaying the rebuilding of the temple. Haggai reminds us to obey God instead of always waiting for the perfect time.
  • Do Not Give Up on Small Beginnings: The new temple did not look as great as the old one, but God told the people to keep going. Even small efforts can become part of something greater.
  • Remember That God Is With You: God told his people, “I am with you”. His presence moves us with courage and strength when we face difficulties.
  • Faith Should Lead to Action: The people showed their faith by listening to God and starting the work. In the same way, our faith should be seen in the way we live and act.
