The Background of the Book of Nehemiah is that Nehemiah was a cupbearer to the Persian King. When he heard that the walls of Jerusalem were broken and the people were suffering, he felt very sad. Then he prayed to God and trusted him, and God gave Nahemiah courage and wisdom. Later, Nehemiah went to Jerusalem and led the people to rebuild the walls of the city. Along with this, he also helped the people to return to God and taught them to obey his word and live faithfully.

Nehemiah’s Prayer and Permission to Rebuild (Nehemiah 1-2)

In the first chapters of Nehemiah, Nehemiah first hears that Jerusalem lies in ruins, and this deeply troubles him. He mourns, fasts, and prays, confessing the sins of Israel and asking God for mercy and success. Later, god opens the way when King Artaxerxes allows Nehemiah to go to Jerusalem, then Nehemiah inspects the broken walls and seeks with faith, and encourages the people to rise and rebuild. Together, they trust God and begin the work.

Here, families and leaders work together, each repairing the wall shows teamwork and shared duty. As chapter 4 tells how enemies mocked and threatened the builders, but Nehemiah prayed, set guards, and encouraged the people to trust God while they kept working. Then Nehemiah corrects injustice among Jews and urges the leaders to fear God and to act fairly.

These chapters also shows hoe enemies tried to distract and frighten Nehemiah, but he stays focused, and the wall is finished in just 52 days. Once the wall is completed, Nehemiah organises the people by appointing leaders and recording the families who returned from exile.

Spiritual Renewal and Repentance (Nehemiah 8-10)

Here, in chapters 8-10, Ezra reads the law of God loudly, and the people clearly understand it. This leads them to rejoice, worship, and obey God’s word. As chapter 9 records how the people confess their sins and remember how God had been faithful to them throughout theri history, and then the people renew their covenant with God, while promising to follow his law, support the Temple, and live holy and faithful lives.

These chapters show how worship was fully restored in Jerusalem. Here, families move into Jerusalem so the city becomes strong and active again, and chapter 12 describes the joyful dedication of the rebuilt wall. Then people celebrate with singing, music, and thanksgiving to God, as it is a time of great joy, which shows that God has completed his work and restored worship in the city.
