The book of Joshua is the sixth book of the Bible, which tells the story of the Israelites entering and conquering the Promised Land, under Joshua’s leadership. This book shows an important change in Israel’s history. After Moses, Joshua becomes the new leader of the Israelites, who is chosen by God to take them into the Promised Land. This book teaches lessons about courage, faith, and obedience. It also shows that God keeps his promises.

In Joshua’s leadership, the people won the battles and got the land which God had promised to them, because they trusted and followed him. In addition, this book reminds us that when we follow God with confidence and are faithful to his commands, he will guide us, protect us, and help us to achieve success in his plans.

Let’s walk through the chapters of Joshua to understand the teaching that shows how God leads his people with courage, faith, and obedience as they enter the Promised Land, Canaan.

Joshua: Winning the Land with God’s Power

1. Getting Ready for the Promised Land (Joshua 1-5)

In these chapters of Joshua, God prepares the Israelites to enter the Promised Land, and he also encourage Joshua to be strong and brave, as he will always be with him. Then Joshua leads the people across the Jordan River, just like god parts the Red Sea. Then the Israelites made a monument to remember god’s miracle, and  Rahab helped the explorers in Jericho by showing her faith in God.

Before the victory, the people renewed their promise with God and celebrated the Passover. These chapters show that victory is achieved by trusting God, obeying his commands, and preparing our lives spiritually. Moreover, it also tells us that God carries his people with strength and guidance, and assurance while walking in his obedience.

2. Winning the Promised Land, Canaan (Joshua 6-12)

These chapters of Joshua 6-12 tell how Israel won battles and entered the Promised Land. The people see the fall of the Jericho walls and face the lies by the people of Gibeon. Here, Joshua also leads the people through major southern and northern battles, and the Bible lists all the kings’ names who are defeated by the Israelites. These stories show that Israel’s victories did not come from strong armies or weapons, but their success came from trusting God, by following his commands, and by believing that he was fighting for them.

This gives us the message that victory comes from God, not from military strength. Having faith and obedience in him leads to success.

3. Division of the Land (Joshua 13-21)

When the battles are over, Joshua divides the Promised Land among the twelve tribes of Israel. Each tribe receives the land which God has promised to them. Special protected towns are made to protect people who get harmed accidentally, and the Levitical cities are given to the priests so that they can teach and guide the people.

These chapters of Joshua show that God keeps his promises and makes sure that everyone receives their own inheritance, as he tells them.

4. Joshua’s Last Encouragement and Covenant Reminder

In these chapters, Joshua gives his final messages to the people of Israel and reminds them to stay faithful to God and follow his commands. Also, Joshua encourages them to be loyal to the Lord who brought them into the Promised Land. he helps the tribes to settle peacefully and calls everyone to renew their promise to serve God.

These chapters of the book of Joshua show the desire of Joshua for his people to live with obedience, unity, and trust in God even after his leadership ends.
